Humming along to my car radio, the song that came on was Every Picture Tells a Story Don't It? For the life of me I could not get that song out of my head. I was humming it at the grocery store, while I was getting the car washed and at my hair salon appointment. I'm telling you it was driving me crazy. As my mom always told me, there is a reason for everything that happens. As it turned out she was correct at least in this case.
Tidying up, I encountered an entire drawer of pictures. Thinking back, there was a plan not too long ago, to put them in albums for these were filled with memories that I cherished. Last month was my daughters wedding and there was an envelope filled from this moment in time. Then that song came back into my head and I knew what I desired to do. Instead of putting these pictures in an album, I wanted them in view. There was an entire wall along side my staircase that needed new life. With these pictures I could tell a story with an artistic approach.
First thing I did was to go through my photos and try to decide which ones were to be framed. There were just too many and different sizes. So my plan was to make a collage and have it hung along the staircase. The dictionary defines collage as an art form in which various materials are glued onto a surface to make a picture. The nice part about the collage wall frames that I choose, the pictures could be removed and replaced. As your life story revolves so can your pictures.
To have a collage you must have a theme in common. For example: a vacation, family, the baby, wedding, or even an office party. The pictures themselves can vary in size or shapes. The pictures you choose should remind you of a special day or event. When a neighbor or friend takes a glance, the theme should come to mind in an instant. The collage wall frame lets you proudly display your photos in an organized way while showcasing your treasured moments.
Most traditional wall frames cannot compare to the artistic nature of a collage wall frame. There are various shapes, sizes, designs and materials. Through my research I came upon them in wood, wrought iron, acrylic, ceramic and metal. They have collage wall frames that will blend seamlessly with contemporary or traditional decor. Some are incorporated with wall sconces, clocks and mirrors. If you are truly creative, there are kits that allow you to make them yourself. They all mount easily to the wall and usually come with the hardware.
If most of your pictures are many colors, stick with a one color frame but if most are black and white, jazz it up with a colorful frame. The key is to have the wall collage frame feel like one art piece not like wallpaper.
If you are hanging the collage wall frame along side a staircase, like me, make sure you mimic the staircase lines. It is best to hang the frame every two stairs. This will make the art work flow and be pleasing to the eye. If you are hanging this directly on a wall experiment with different angles. Not all frames need to be in the center of the wall.
The final result of my art work turned out just as I had imagined it would. Now every time I glance at the wall, the fond memories are there for me to cherish. So start your search for the perfect collage wall frame so that your memories can be in view.
Three glorious years ago my family moved into our dream house. It was large but not so enormous that it would be too hard to maintain. It seemed to be perfect. Our only dilemma was that after the down payment, closing costs and the many rooms of new furniture there was very little we had left to spend.
Like any new homeowner you wanted to personalize your surroundings. The bare, stark, sterile walls seemed to be pleading for excitement. We had a few pictures, mirrors and wall sconces but it lacked luster and brilliance that I deeply wanted to portray.
For several weekends in a row I browsed all the home decorating stores in my area. I priced the many gallons of paint or wall coverings that would be needed. Besides the hefty dollar amount, the work and labor was not attainable to accommodate our work schedules. Every time I entered my home it just didn't feel like it was mine. I craved warmth, excitement and creativity. Instead what I encountered was cold, dull and bland.
Then it hit me like a brick! Going online I found numerous stores that carried wall graphics that seemed to be made for me. There is no other way to describe it. They're perfect for how they gave me the outlet to individualize my space.
Here are the many positive aspects of this technique. You do not have to be artistic or technical. They are made to look like paint and will fit anyone's budget. They allow you the freedom to decorate your walls in no time at all. There is a plethora of themes, sizes, shapes, colors and patterns. The most common material is vinyl although other materials are available. There is photographic paper, fabric, canvas or polypropylene film.
You never have the mess of paste. The material is always backed with temporary or permanent adhesive. They all use high quality ink technology so your wall graphics can be maintained for many years. Most are cut using a digital cutting machine which assures clean crisp edges that will not peel away from the wall.
It seems to freshen up your walls and is the best alternative to painting walls. Purchasing the temporary adhesive backed wall graphics means you will never get board of your decor. Just peel it off and it leaves no marks or residue. You can add, change and let your imagination run wild. Your only limitations is your creative imagination.
Graphic wall art comes in different forms. You can buy this art form as stickers, decals, murals, lettering or wallpaper. There are companies that will custom design a style or you may choose any image, picture, poem or quote. Since most of us do not live alone, graphic wall art fits like a glove for the entire family. My son is glued to sports and through the internet his surroundings are filled with custom wall decals. There in the center of the wall is a decal of my son kicking the winning field goal for his team.
This art form doesn't exclude girls. My daughter like most teens has the phone glued to her ear. We found a kit that was large enough for the wall behind her bed. This wall mural had pictures of cell phones, I-pods, and tons of teens talking. There were phrases, and song lyrics amongst colorful and stimulating designs.
Both my kids love their rooms. With the help of graphic wall art, they find their room's comfortable and great place to do homework or just hang out. The great part is, as they change so can their walls.
Whether your plans are to decorate one room or the entire house, graphic wall art will compliment your decor and become the topic for discussion. It all depends what you choose and where you hang it. One thing is for sure, its eye appealing and brings your distinct personality alive.
When most of us think of animal wall art, there are images that come to mind like cartoon characters and fun loving friends of our childhood. In today's lifestyle you can find jungle animals for the nursery to real life photos that can add drama to your living room or family room decorating theme. There are a multitude of topics, colors, textures and materials to turn your creative visions into your decorative reality.
Here are some items that can be grouped together or utilized by themselves to bring your imagination into a reality. These are some items that I have found that can be pictured in an animal motif. Wallpaper, wallpaper boarders, stickers, clocks, paintings, murals, tapestries, metal artwork, accents, plates and calendars.
There is an overwhelming selection of wallpaper, boarders, murals and stickers for the animal enthusiast. They are quick, affordable and easy to install solution for decorating. There are some stickers that can effortlessly be rearranged or removed and used again and again. Accent pieces bring the exotic and lively animal charm of the outside world into your home.
In my family room there are copper plated animal wall hooks that have become the focal point of my room. Another animal theme that I have placed on the walls in the same room is animal heads. These are not the real things but serve the same purpose. Above the fire place I have proudly hanging a deer head and in the two corners is a horse and elephant head. All of these pieces are made out of resin and there is faux fur on the deer. Most of my visitors take one look and ask the question are they real? What I answer depends on the visitor.
To perk up my bathroom walls I have used a border with incredibly vivid fish and dolphins to complete the look. In my kitchen I have placed artwork and decorative plates of roosters and chickens and on the light switchcovers continued with the same theme.
For ten years the princess of my house has been my cocker spaniel Clea. The entire wall has metal art work of cocker spaniels and in the center is a cocker spaniel calendar. This calendar besides being beautiful has all my activities and special dates to help me get through the day.
One of my closest friends has a daughter who is their only child. To say the least, the child for her age, has everything. I am aware that one of her favorite things is stuff animals. She is fortunate and has many. And it does not seem that she has a favorite one. I found a store that makes a stuffed animal wall mount that can be used as a decoration on the wall. This also can be taken down and played with as an easy to handle puppet. It seems to be a hit because I am still hearing about it!
National graphic is a magazine that I subscribe to. They came out with a fun and educational clock that hangs in my daughter's nursery. It is a fully working clock that displays pictures of animals and on the hour announces an animal sound. It features the twelve most loved animals. This also came with an educational booklet that will grow with my child. It has detailed information about the animals and the child can add her or his own touch with colors.

By my pool area I have hung upon the walls a piece of art of a beach front scene. There are sea gulls flying around with the view of rushing waves. Whenever I am gazing at it I seem to be transported into total relaxation. Around my fence I have outdoor wall art of hummingbirds feeding, cardinals bathing and blue jays in flight. Last week I added a small picture of a fury mother and baby squirrel scampering up a tree with an acorn in the mom's mouth.
If you're seeking that special gift, this can also be your answer. I have a good friend that moved away and I had a piece of art custom made for her. As you can see, your only limitation for this decor is your imagination. Become creative let loose and you will be inspired to keep adding more as your landscape becomes more unique and inspiring.
Faux finishing is a popular painting technique for several reasons. First, it's an inexpensive way to update a room. Second, it's a DIY project that most homeowners can complete with little or no assistance.
Faux painting describes a wide range of decorative painting techniques that originally began as a way to replicate expensive material, such as marble, leather and wood. Today, faux painting has expanded to include many other decorative finishes.
Some of the most popular faux painting techniques include:
Marbleizing or Faux Marbling
This technique replicates marble. It is accomplished using plaster and glaze techniques. The technique uses oil paints and glazes. The oil paints and glazes allow it to dry slowly and create softly blended edges and colors. The marble veins are created by dragging the edge of a feather through the paint. Simultaneously, water drops splattered in the paint create the look of natural flaws in the stone. It's a simple process with a dramatic effect. Because it can look overwhelming in large areas, painting experts suggest applying marble faux finishing to small areas.
This technique is used to imitate exotic or hard-to-find wood varieties.
Color Washing is extremely popular as it has minimal restrictions. It is a free-form technique that incorporates the use of multiple hues of glaze blended together with a paint brush.
This technique is a glazing technique. It uses twisted or bunched up rags to create a textural pattern. This technique is a favorite of beginner DIYers and for those on a tight budget as there are limited supplies necessary to purchase.
Additional Faux Painting Ideas
Brick Faux Finish
This technique is perfect for covering up imperfect or uneven walls. It will hide most imperfections on walls.
Leather Faux Finish
More time consuming than most faux finishing techniques as several coats are necessary. Additionally, several specialized tools are necessary for this technique.
Suede Faux Finish
Suede faux finish produces a beautiful finish. However, many homeowners note that it scratches easily as it is a soft and delicate finish.
Clouds Faux Finish
This cheery technique is great for a baby or child's bedroom.
Silk Faux Finish
This technique incorporates a tinted metallic glaze into the final finish. Be aware that this technique takes 3 days to apply as time is needed between coats to allow for complete drying.
I was going through my emails the other day and came across a message from one of my friends from California. Their names are Pete and Betty. They are a married couple from San Diego. They own a beautiful home overlooking the ocean. Pete is a business owner. He owns a landscaping company. Betty is an attorney and works for the county.
Pete and Betty have two young children. They are twins. Both of them are girls and I believe that they recently turned five years old.
I first met Pete and Betty when I was living in San Diego a few years ago. They happened to be members of the same health club as me. I would usually come across both of them doing laps in the health club swimming pool. After a short while they became good friends of me and my husband.
Anyway, I got an email from them a day or two ago. In the email they said that they were all doing good and had a new decorating project about to start in their home. They also said that they knew I was the only wall decor consultant that they knew personally and had wanted to get a good suggestion for their new decorating project.
From there they went on to say that the two young girls, at the age of five, are no longer babies. They have both grown into two young beautiful children. They went on to write that the decor of their bedrooms has been outgrown. The girls are no longer babies and it is time to change the theme of their rooms from babies to young ladies. They were looking for a suggestion from me in the direction of what kind of bedroom decor would take both of their rooms to the next step in the progression of their children's lives.
All I could think was child wall mural. So I went to work. My research found many interesting and unusual child wall murals that would go well with children the same age as Pete and Betty's girls.
I went online and browsed several of my favorite wall mural sites. The first site I explored had well over 250 child wall murals designed for young girls. This was almost too much to handle, but I remembered that the decision making was totally on Pete and Betty along with their two little girls. All I was doing is a little research before I replied with my thoughts of child wall murals for the kid's bedrooms.
The second website I browsed was quite different from the first. This site was dedicated to children's wall murals. This site had girl's wall murals in beautiful pastel colors of different topics such as painted flower designs, rainbows, magical under sea adventures, pastel unicorn, butterfly castle and Cinderella castle.
From the beginning I knew that this child wall mural idea of mine was going to be the perfect solution for Pete and Betty's children. I sent off an email to Pete and Betty. A few days later I got an email from them telling me that the child wall mural was a great idea. Before long I got another email from Pete and Betty, but this time they sent me pictures of the girl's rooms with their new child wall murals in place. They picked out two beautiful scenes and both rooms looked magical.
If you are thinking about updating the look of your child's bedroom, be sure to explore the possibilities of a child wall mural. These murals have the capabilities of transforming a child's bedroom into a gentile relaxing atmosphere that will open the imagination of all who enter the room.
